Bidhannagar police have arrested a fraudster who duped a housewife from Baguati of Rs 73,000, impersonating a cyber crime branch officer. He told the woman that a complaint had been lodged against her for missing loan EMIs and threatened to arrest her if she did not pay.
The man, identified as Mithun Mondal, also defrauded a Bangur Avenue woman of Rs 13 lakh, posing as an insurance company official.
“Mondal was arrested in a separate fraud case in Lake Town on February 18 where he confessed to defrauding the people of Baguiati. And in the case of a Bangur Avenue resident, he claimed to help her revive a lapsed policy and duped her. The woman filed the complaint on February 14. The accused was nabbed from a rented accommodation in New Town,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
“The woman took a personal loan from a finance company and missed the February EMI. Knowing the exact loan repayment schedule, the fraudster posed as a police officer who actually worked at the police station but was recently transferred,” another police officer said.
